The members' exhibition 2023 is dedicated to the complex relationship between human and nature. Around 30 artists from the Künstlerhaus Association open up a broad narrative field with their transmedial works: they negotiate the status quo of our threatened planet as well as dystopian and visionary ideas for the future; hereby gender-specific, ironic, and humorous approaches to HUMAN_NATURE are not to be missed. Visitors to the exhibition and the broad programme (guided tours, talks, workshops, performances, cinema, satellite exhibitions and a “day of action” on 16.9.) are invited not only to read the narrative, but rather to participate in it.

With the exhibition FALTEN (German for folds or wrinkles), the MAK Asia Collection deciphers the complexity of the phenomenon of Falten with regard to technical, creative, physical, symbolic, and cultural dimensions.
The transmedially conceived show illuminates Falten in multiple perspectives from the viewpoints of the history of design, culture, and ideas as well as cultural anthropology. Starting from a comprehensive concept, Falten are presented not only in the form of fabric designs and as a design method. They are also discussed as cultural practices and as a topos of aesthetic distinction in order to show their broad facets as a cultural technique and their philosophical-symbolic dimensions. A wide range of objects can be seen: from textiles and works on paper to furniture and paintings. The transregional exhibits are partly from the MAK collection and are supplemented by loans.

You don’t do that! Who is sticking out the tongue, and why? The tongue here symbolizes trust in life, its untamed nature and the fleshliness of being human. Bodily perception by means of the tongue can unleash some of the most immediate of human feelings—whether it like the taste of a kiss or the experience of food.
 
The works of Song Jing in the exhibition THE UNTAMED HAIR OF THE GRANDMOTHER (DIE UNGEZÄHMTEN HAARE DER GROSSMUTTER) embody vitality and physicality. In her eponymous work, these hair protrude boldly, vividly, and daringly out of the paper. They will not let themselves be stopped, nor will they let themselves be deterred from an intense life with all its experiences, wishes and dreams of love, strength, desires, intuition and talent—all this and much more is part of our life. To be seen at Sotheby’s in Vienna.

Die Werkserien Song Jings widmen sich der Erforschung der Pole Kollektiv und Individuum, sowie einer Reihe von Themen, die Bewusstsein, Körperlichkeit und Emotionen einschließen. Die Künstlerin entwickelt dazu eine psycho-archäologische Methode, die davon ausgeht, dass Emotionen nicht nur menschliches Erleben und Verhalten beeinflussen, sondern auch Gegenstände „beseelen“. Die Artefakte, die sich aus der Verschmelzung der projizierten Gefühle mit den von Song ausgewählten Objekten ergeben, sind subtile, materielle Manifestationen innerer Emotionslandschaften.
Die Aufmerksamkeit von Song Jing gilt dabei Differenzierungen und Variationen im Makro-Bereich. Für die Serie ALL THE WO/MEN I AM hat die Künstlerin hunderte Dattelkerne in Nahaufnahme abgelichtet. Die visuelle Formalisierung der an Vulven erinnernden Kerne ist bei Song Jing eng verknüpft mit der Dimension des Performativen. Über zwei Jahre hat die Künstlerin Medjool-Datteln verspeist, deren Kerne gesammelt und sich auf explorative Weise den Repräsentationsmustern von Gendercodes und kulturell bedingten, geschlechtlichen Prägungen gewidmet. Denn Außerhalb von Sexshops und der Pornoindustrie war von Vulven lange wenig zu sehen. Selbst WissenschaftlerInnen konnten die äußeren Geschlechtsmerkmale von Frauen lange Zeit nicht korrekt benennen. Statt das sichtbare Genital als Vulva zu benennen, verwendeten sie den Begriff Vagina ─ was nicht nur medizinisch falsch ist, sondern das Sichtbare sprachlich ausblendet und damit unsichtbar macht.
Mit ALL THE WO/MEN I AM zeigt Song Jing das weibliche Geschlecht in abstrahierter Form, in 366 Einzelbildern und 366 Variationen. Die Darstellungsart der weiblichen Geschlechtsorgane ist seit jeher Indikator für das weibliche Rollenbild im betreffenden, gesellschaftlichen System. Wirklichkeitskonstruktionen im Zusammenhang mit sozialen Feldern, Individualität und damit auch Identität werden in ALL THE WO/MEN I AM kritisch reflektiert. Diese Reflexionen geschehen in Song Jings Arbeiten in erster Linie über Assoziationen und emotionale Stimmungen. Dazu löst die Künstlerin ihre Dattelkerne in der Werkserie VENUS IN BATH aus dem steril weißen Umfeld des Fotopapiers und taucht sie in Wogen aus Epoxid-Harz. Die Kerne scheinen sich zu verselbstständigen und, wie die Künstlerin beschreibt, als weibliche Energie Yin durch die transparente Masse zu gleiten, während sie zur männlichen Energie Yang, verkörpert in Form kleiner Vitamin D-Kapseln, in harmonischer Balance stehen. Die Orte dieser von eingefrorener Bewegung geprägten Stillleben sind gläserne „Badewannen“ — für Song so etwas wie Geburtsorte, welche in ihrer Transparenz sanft das verschämt, verschwiegene Körperteil umschließen. Damit entwirft Song Jing im Bildraum 07 eine sinnliche und zugleich humoristische Erzählung gegen das Abwesende, das Nichts und die Scham — ein selbstbewusstes Mantra gegen die Sprachlosigkeit.
